Britain's Arctic edge

The Cairngorms plateau sits above 1,200m and holds sub-Arctic weather ten months of the year. You do not need to hike it. Loch an Eilein, at the plateau's foot, is a two-hour loop through ancient Scots pine, past a ruined island castle, with red squirrels in the branches.
