Britain's Arctic edge
The Cairngorms plateau sits above 1,200m and holds sub-Arctic weather ten months of the year. You do not need to hike it. Loch an Eilein, at the plateau's foot, is a two-hour loop through ancient Scots pine, past a ruined island castle, with red squirrels in the branches.
Family day plan
- 10am - Cairngorm Reindeer Herd hillwalk (book ahead).
- 12:30 - Lunch at the Old Bridge Inn, Aviemore.
- 2pm - Loch Morlich beach and swim.
- 4pm - Coffee at the Mountain Cafe, Aviemore.
